The Cerberus Code was a highly-classified U.S. military protocol and a fail-safe device which, when activated via three different access codes being entered, would help unleash a nationwide nuclear meltdown. It was also used to prevent any ICBM missiles from reaching its target in case if any of them were involuntarily launched. The President, the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff were given one code each that would help activating this protocol if ever prompted to. On the other hand, the Cerberus Code was designed as a self-contained isolation system once the codes were entered into the protocol and the only way to disable the device is physically a computer located inside the underground Presidential Emergency Operations Center.
Cerberus was the Greek and Roman mythology name of a multi-headed (usually three-headed) dog, or "hellhound" which guards the entrance of Hades, to prevent those who entered from ever escaping.
