Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826) was an American politician who served as the 3rd President of the United States of America from 1801 to 1809. He was succeeded by James Madison.

Biography[]

He is best known for being one of the Founding Fathers of America and the principal author of the 1776 Declaration of Independence during the American Revolutionary War.

During his presidency, he oversaw acquisition of the vast Louisiana Territory from France in 1803 and sent out the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which lasted from 1804 to 1806. He later sent three other explorers to explore the new west. Jefferson doubled the size of the United States during his presidency.
